Today is day seven of attempting to cut out dairy and gluten.
I’m a huge dairy fan, I particularly love cheese– the typical love story of a girl and the melty goodness that is cheddar, and havarti and pepper jack and Brie and Camembert and…. well, you know how it is. Before last week, and basically since I started eating solid foods post surgery, I’ve been eating cheese with ever single meal. It has been glorious.
However, it has come to my attention that my dairy obsession might not be good for me, as a woman with PCOS. I’ve read a lot of stuff about how dairy and gluten can fuck with my body, particularly my hormones, and can exacerbate my PCOS symptoms, including anovulation. That’s a problem just in general, but it’s an even bigger problem when you’re trying to get pregnant. I want to set my body up for success! I want to give my body the best chance for conceiving when the time comes next year, and the choices I make now will affect that process 3 months, 6 months, a year from now. Also, eliminating dairy in particular gets me that much closer to eating kosher– I don’t have to worry about mixing dairy with meat when I’m no longer eating dairy!
So, seeing all my PCOS sisters online talking about cutting out dairy and gluten I thought– well why not try it? What’s the harm? At worst my body just stays the same, and best case scenario my body responds favorably and I become symptom free. Nothing to lose, right?
Except cheese. My beautiful, melty, delicious cheese.
One of the things that has made this transition so much easier is the fact that Kourtney and I decided to make this change together. She is ever the supporting wife, giving up foods she loves so that we can eat meals together and miss cheese together instead of alone. It’s been incredibly helpful for me to change our diet as a team because I think she is more creative in the kitchen, more open to trying new things. That prevents me from getting into a meal slump (because I tend to find two or three meals and stick with them until I hate them). I’ve enjoyed the challenge of finding recipes that are both gluten and dairy free AND allergy free (Kourtney is allergic to quite a few things), plus we’re becoming more aware of what we’re putting in our bodies because we’re reading labels more and more when we go shopping. Doing all that on your own is exhausting, but doing it with a partner? Muuuuuuuuch more manageable.
My personal plan is to start out with eating gluten and dairy free, see where I am symptom-wise in a month, and then if all is well I’ll dump refined sugars. I also want to reduce/eliminate my intake of soy (apparently that one also fucks with my hormones) and stop eating red meats, but one thing at a time! I didn’t want to do all of them at once because I don’t want to feel deprived, so a slow transition seems best. It’s been a week with no gluten or dairy and I’m feeling pretty okay. And it will take time before I see a change in my body, but I’m willing to wait. I just hope all of this will help me with my PCOS symptoms.
